Big Opportunities at Exhibitions During Coronavirus ‘Crisis’

Coronavirus hysteria has gripped the world, largely due to sensationalist media, but there are lots of opportunities for companies that take part in exhibitions at this time.

Many companies are worried about the impact the coronavirus outbreak might have on their businesses — ourselves included. But it pays to look beyond the headlines, as the media love to whip-up fear because it sells papers and generates online clicks. However, this ignores the actual reality — which in this case is that, so far, the coronavirus is nowhere near as deadly as the seasonal flu that strikes people everywhere and claims over half a million lives annually.

  1. Firstly, there’s less competition, as other companies bow out because they think the shows will not get them the return they need. So you can increase your presence and overshadow the current competition.
  2. Those travelling to exhibitions are not going to be time-wasters; they are looking to do serious business, as no one wants to risk their health if they don’t need anything.
  3. There will be less footfall at exhibitions during the coronavirus outbreak — but more genuine and qualified attendees. This means you can have much longer, better talks with people and really find out their needs and get your relationship off to the best possible start.
  4. Then there’s the opportunity to see the show yourself. While attendee numbers will undoubtedly drop, you’ll have a chance to get some top-class networking done — even do a bit of industrial espionage on your competition and keep yourself up-to-date with what’s going on in the industry.

The world is not going to stop because a few people are scared of catching a new virus — the majority of people are carrying on as normal. So while all your competition sits at home worrying, get out there and make the most of it.

Can we really blame a hysterical media for the “health crisis” engulfing the UK and wider world? There’s no doubt many people are worried, if not scared, about what’s going on with Covid-19. The virus was recently named as such by the World Health Organisation because it thought it was more politically correct than a “coronavirus” that could be linked to China — even if that’s where the outbreak emerged. It’s this fear that’s driving people to buy newspapers or go to news websites and see what the latest is.

As of writing, one British tabloid is screaming that there is “NO ESCAPE” (their caps) because coronavirus may kill “15 MILLION” people around the world. Even more measured, trustworthy media can barely help themselves in their rush to publish sensational coronavirus “news”. “The coronavirus is going global, and it could bring the world economy to a standstill,” the financial news site Bloomberg heralded, warning in an analysis by its staff that the bug could cost the global economy $2.7 trillion. And on it goes.

Meanwhile, businesses are trying to stay in business. Some are wondering what all the fuss is about, while others are closing their offices and sending their staff home because one or more has come down with a cold or flu. Others are cancelling large and small events, including the world’s largest communications exhibition, in Barcelona. Even the Olympics, being held in Tokyo this summer, is not safe.

Coronavirus: A Treatment Plan for Business

It’s certainly prudent to take appropriate measures during this time of heightened health concern. Washing your hands frequently and not touching your face seems to be the best advice, as all those face masks are doing nothing to prevent infection from this disease. The danger is that continuing panic and alarm will hurt even more people if companies cannot grow, or trade and jobs are lost.

It’s vital for business people to get out there and meet at events such as conferences and exhibitions. It’s at exhibitions they can find new ideas and products to help propel their businesses forward, as well as making new contacts that could be invaluable and potentially result in important deals.
